Motorcycle Helmet Detects Crashes and Instantly Reports the Rider's Location

In Thailand, 80 percent of people killed in road accidents are riding motorcycles. Now, one agency hopes its new invention could mean the difference between life and death.

The "Helpmet" was designed by BBDO Bangkok for the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (the same partnership that recently came up with the fat-reducing AbsorbPlate) to help address Thailand's staggeringly high rate of motorcycle fatalities—the second highest in the world.

The helmet uses shock-detecting technology to sense when the rider has been in an accident, with GPS and cellular access built in to alert emergency crews. When the helmet detects a crash at a force that could cause unconsciousness, it sends an SMS to the National Emegency Center. The message includes the rider's location via GPS, and a SIM card contains more detailed information that the rider fills out on a website in advance.

Because a vast majority of Thailand's motorcycle's accidents occur on rural roads, the team behind the Helpmet hope it will reduce fatalities by alerting paramedics far more quickly and with pinpoint accuracy.

Not Enough House Support for Louisiana Motorcycle Helmet Repeal Bill

A bid to repeal Louisiana’s motorcycle helmet requirement narrowly failed in the state House.

The measure fell shy Wednesday of the 53 votes needed to advance to the Senate for consideration. Lawmakers voted 49-46 in support of the measure.

Rep. Clay Schexnayder, R-Gonzales, called his proposal a “personal choice bill.” He said it promoted safety by still requiring people under 21 years old to wear a helmet and undergo a training course.

Rep. Kirk Talbot, R-River Ridge, said he did not care whether riders made the personal choice to wear a helmet, but he was concerned the measure did not make mention of insurance policies. Repealing the mandatory motorcycle helmet law would “cost the state dearly,” Talbot said.

Opposing lawmakers joined Talbot in suggesting the measure could raise Louisiana’s already high insurance rates and cost the state more money if uninsured riders became injured in crashes. Schexnayder defended his bill against the criticism, saying the state does not currently have anyone on public care as a result of a motorcycle accident, according to the state Department of Health and Hospitals.

The bill could also lead to more motorcycle crash deaths, its opponents said. They compared wearing helmets while riding a motorcycle to other legally mandated safety precautions, like motor vehicle seat belts and airbags.

Supporters of the law repeal presented their own comparisons, arguing that bull riders are not required to wear helmets. The state, they said, also does not mandate helmets for people who ride horses.

Comparing motorcycles to horses seemed flawed for Rep. Terry Landry, D-New Iberia. He asked the chamber to “exercise good judgment,” consider high-speed, ninja-style motorcycles on state highways and reject the measure.

“Sometimes we have to do things to protect people from themselves,” Landry said.

Gov. John Bel Edwards said Tuesday he opposes repeal of the motorcycle helmet requirement. Asked if he would veto the bill if it won final passage, the Democratic governor replied: “There’s no other way at that point to express my lack of support.”

“I know that that will cause a lot more folks who are involved in accidents while riding a motorcycle to be more seriously injured or killed, so I don’t support that,” he said.

Domino's Pizza delivery man wearing Motorcycle Helmet 'headbutted customer who complained over missing toppings'

A man was left battered and bruised after an angry delivery driver attacked him during a row over missing pizza toppings.

Pizza lover Paul Williams claimed he was headbutted by a violent Domino's delivery driver wearing a motorcycle helmet after an order had been placed from one of the chain's branches in Exeter, Devon.

According to Mr. Williams' family, the worker - thought to be a manager at the restaurant- then barged into the home and tried to 'strangle' him before stamping on his head.

Armed police swooped on the property and the driver allegedly began to shoot at police with an air rifle before he was arrested.

Posting a photo of his bruised head on Domino's Pizza's Facebook page, Mr. Williams said: 'Thank you Domino's for the personal attention of your manager last night.

'You do not expect your managers to come to your house and beat you wearing a motorcycle helmet and full motorcycle gear if you complain of missing toppings.

'Franchise holders representatives attitude was I cannot give you any details as I have customers.

'Manager is in police custody after armed police called as he was shooting at officers.'

It is not yet clear if Mr. Williams picked up his pizza from the shop or if it was delivered, or how he made the complaint, but he claims it was followed up by a visit from the store's manager on Friday night.

It is understood the man arrived on a motorbike and allegedly attacked Mr. Williams in the home while his son was inside.

His shocked mother Gaenor Williams said the man was firing at police with an air rifle following the attack.

Writing on Facebook, she said: 'He is a danger to the community.
'My son was beaten up by this lunatic and his girlfriend was scared to death by this idiot entering her home to commit such an act of violence.

'He was shooting at the police with an air rifle.

'The police took it away with them.

'My son and grandson were in danger.

'He headbutted my son with his motorbike helmet on and then tried to strangle my son and stamped on his hand with his motorbike boot leaving his hand in a hell of a state.'

However, Mr, Williams said the incident was 'in the hands of the police'.

He said: 'I am not making any comment. It's in the hands of the police - that's all.

'I don't want to gossip.'

Meanwhile, his sister Gail Williams said the family had been asked by the police not to discuss the attack.

She added: 'My brother is the one who has been left with his face re-arranged.'

Domino's Pizza says it will 'co-operate fully' with the police investigation.

A spokesperson said: 'As this is now a current police investigation there is very little we can say on the matter.

'However, please be rest assured we are taking this incident extremely seriously and will be providing the police with our full co-operation.'

HJC helmet vs hydraulic press

NO, this HJC helmet isn't being crushed as part of a rigorous testing regime by Snell. It's being destroyed purely to see what a motorcycle helmet looks like when it's crushed in a hydraulic press because watching objects get crushed is apparently a thing now, judging from the popularity of the videos on the Press Tube channel.

Anyway, is it us, or is there something vaguely hypnotic about watching this lid meets its maker? Just us, then....
