Is my Motorcycle Helmet too small?

There's more to fitting a motorcycle helmet than just buying the one that matches your hat size or guessing at “small, medium or large.” However, hat size is a good starting point. Measure your head at its largest circumference – usually just above your eyebrows in front, over your eyes and around in back. Try it several times so you know you've gotten the largest number. If your head size falls between the numbers listed, use the larger size. Most motorcycle helmets are marked and sold as S, M, L or XL, so you may need to contact the manufacturer for size equivalents. Helmet sizes vary among manufacturers and model types.

The Best Way to Try on Your Motorcycle Helmet

*Hold it by the chin straps. The bottom of the motorcycle  helmet should face you with the front  pointing down.
*Put your thumbs on the inside of the straps, balancing the motorcycle  helmet with your fingertips.
*Spread the sides of the motorcycle  helmet apart slightly and slip it down over your head using the chin straps.

The motorcycle helmet should fit snugly and may even feel a bit too tight until it is in place correctly. Be sure it sits squarely on your head. It shouldn't be tilted back on your head like a hat. Remember, if your helmet is too large, several things could happen: it will move around and up and down on your head when you least want it to; it can be noisy and let in wind; worst of all, it may come off in a crash!

Once the motorcycle helmet is on your head, make a few other fit checks before fastening the straps.

*The cheek pads should touch your cheeks without pressing uncomfortably.
*There should be no gaps between your temples and the brow pads.
*If the  motorcycle helmet has a neck roll, it shouldn't push the helmet away from the back of your    neck.On full-face helmets, press on the chin piece. The motorcycle helmet or face shield should not *touch your nose or chin. If it does, it will surely do so at speed from wind pressure.

With the helmet still on and the straps securely fastened, move it from side to side and up and down with your hands. If it fits right, your skin should move as the motorcycle helmet is moved. You should feel as if a slight, even pressure is being exerted all over your head. Remember, too, that a helmet loosens up a bit as the comfort liner compresses through use. A new helmet should be as tight as you can comfortably wear it.

Now, with the chin strap still securely fastened and your head straight, try rolling the motorcycle helmet forward off your head. You shouldn't be able to pull it off. If you can, the helmet is too big. Take off the helmet. Does your head feel sore anywhere? Are there any red spots on your forehead? Pressure points can be uncomfortable and can cause a headache after a long ride, so be sure your helmet isn't causing any. If it is, choose the next largest size or try a different brand of helmet. Human heads are not all the same shape, neither are helmets.

If you are still unsure about the helmet's fit, wear it around the store for a while to see if it remains comfortable. A motorcycle helmet is an important investment, no matter what its price. Be sure the one you choose is right for you.

A Windshield Wiper On Your Motorcycle Helmet?

For those of you who ride in the rain and are fed up with trying to ride while pawing at your shield or turning your head from side to side to get the drops to blow off comes Rainpal - an electric wiper for your full face shield.



The Rainpal’s inventors claim it fits onto most full faced helmets, has multiple wiping speeds including a delayed speed, holds and disperses visor cleaning spray, and charges via USB. It can be detached in seconds when not needed, and Rainpal claims they’ve tested it up to 100 miles per hour.

The wiper is controlled by a button on the side or a wireless remote which is strapped to the bars using a watch like enclosure system and comes with hot swappable batteries, which provide 90 minutes of continuous swiping.



Rainpal claims the kit will even diminish visor fogging too. That fogging is caused by differences in temperature on the interior and exterior of the visor, and keeping cold water off the front helps reduce the temperature Delta.

Unsurprisingly, this invention comes from England, where it rains a lot. The Rainpal weighs 150 grams which shouldn’t add too much weight to the motorcycle helmet, but could feel odd concentrated on the visor.

Face it! The Rainpal looks dorky.  I personally think it is the worst idea ever.  What does that mean?  It means that they will probably sell 10,000 of them today....I am always wrong on these things.

The Rainpal retails for $70 for the black version, but you can pay an extra $1.25 for one with a U.S. or English flag on it. For those of you who ride in the rain, would you wear one?

Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Encourages Motorcyclists to Take Actions to Reduce Risk, Save Money While Riding

Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller today urged all drivers to be aware of motorcycles, as warmer weather means more motorcyclists on Pennsylvania roadways. Commissioner Miller also encourages motorcyclists to consider safety measures which can save lives, reduce injuries, and save money as well.

"Protective eye wear to shield your eyes from the wind, bugs, rocks, or any other flying object is required under Pennsylvania law," Commissioner Miller said. "In addition, protective headgear, while optional for most riders, is required for anyone 21 years old or younger, unless that person has two years of riding experience or has completed a motorcycle safety course approved by PennDOT or the Motorcycle Safety Foundation."

Commissioner Miller said many insurers offer discounts for motorcyclists who have completed safety courses, have memberships in certain associations, such as the Harley Owners Group, or have a safe driving record. Anti-lock braking systems help maintain control during sudden stops, and some insurers offer discounts for motorcycles with factory installed anti-lock braking systems.

While warmer spring weather offers more motorcyclists the opportunity to enjoy the open road, spring and summer months are also the most dangerous for motorcycle riders. Sixty-two percent of all motorcycle deaths occur from May through September, and 52 percent of motorcycle fatalities in 2014 happened on weekends. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation More than half, 57 percent, of motorcyclist deaths in 2014 occurred on major roads that are not interstate highways or freeways.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says riders who wear a helmet are 37 percent less likely to die in a crash, and 67 percent less likely to suffer a brain injury.

"The Pennsylvania Motorcycle Helmet Law requires helmets to meet standards approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which consumers can verify by looking for the 'DOT' sticker on the helmet," Commissioner Miller said. In addition, approved helmets must be permanently labeled with the following information:

*Name and identification of manufacturer *Precise model designation *Size *Month and year the helmet was manufactured
*Only the "DOT" sticker is required on the outside of the helmet. The remaining information must be legible and able to be read without removing padding or any other permanent part of the motorcycle helmet.

Many insurers offer consumers additional optional coverage for custom parts and equipment, transport trailers, and personal property. Consumers may also have the option of adding coverage for roadside assistance or trip interruption.

"Pennsylvania's motorcycle insurance market is competitive, so I urge consumers to shop around and find the coverage that best meets their needs, at the best price," Commissioner Miller said.

Bill to end Tennessee motorcycle helmet law fails in Senate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A proposal to allow motorcyclists to ride Tennessee roads without safety helmets has been defeated in a Senate committee.

The Finance Committee on Tuesday voted 6-5 against the bill sponsored by Sen. Kerry Roberts. The Springfield Republican argued that ending the helmet law for insured riders who are at least 21 years old would be a boon to tourism in the state.

Opponents argued that police would have no way of knowing which riders held proper medical coverage, and that state hospitals would be left to cover the cost of treating the brain injuries of uninsured motorcyclists.

Watch A Cop Allegedly Pepper Spray Passing Motorcyclists ...

A helmet cam from a rider in Fort Worth, Texas shows what looks to be a police officer, who was parked on the side of the road after pulling a car over, attempting to spray pepper spray into a row of oncoming motorcyclists, for what appears to be no reason.

The group of bikes does appear quite large, but it also seems as if there is a decent mix of styles and like everyone is riding fairly responsibly. You can also see the bikes behind the camera shifting to try and avoid the officer’s assault.

I can’t imagine what would make the officer think they needed to do something like this, or how every police department in the country doesn’t have a morning “remember, everyone has cameras everywhere” reminder, but this is just ridiculous.

The police claim they’re passing along the video to internal affairs for investigation.

Shorty Motorcycle Helmet

See, the thing about motorcycle helmets is that are required by law. The other thing about motorcycle helmets is that most look really bad on you. The trick is finding that sweet spot between "this is the best motorcycle helmets I've ever had" and "this is the last motorcycle helmets I'm going to have." And that's where you find the shorty helmet!

Now, we're not going to pretend that ANY motorcycle helmets is actually cool. But SOME motorcycle helmets can be cooler than others! And so we'll note that using a shorty motorcycle helmets can make you up to 70% less dorky. And we're sure you'll agree, if you've gotta wear a motorcycle helmets, it might as well be a little less terrible.

Motorcycle Helmet Thief

Police say an armed robber wearing a motorcycle helmet targeted a Montgomery County credit union.

The suspect entered the American Heritage Federal Credit Union on the 300 block of Maple Avenue shortly after 9 a.m. in Horsham Township Saturday. The suspect displayed a black handgun and fled with an undetermined amount of cash, according to investigators. The suspect was last seen leaving in a gray or silver sedan. No one was hurt during the incident.

Investigators say the suspect was wearing a black motorcycle helmet, black jacket, black gloves, black pants and black and white shoes. If you have any information on the robbery, please call Detective Adam Dunning at 215-643-8284.

400,000 motorcyclists in England are using motorcycle helmets that 'need to be replaced"

New survey suggests many motorcyclists have a blasé attitude to motorcycle helmet safety, as Ian Marsden reports

Almost 400,000 UK motorcyclists are using motorcycle helmets that need to be replaced because they no longer offer maximum protection, new research suggests.

Helmet manufacturers and independent safety experts, such as the Snell Foundation, agree that helmets should be worn for no more than five years due to degradation in the glues and resins. However, a survey commissioned by motorcycle insurer Carole Nash has found that 62% of bikers would only buy a new motorcycle helmet if they had been involved in an accident.

In addition, 63% said they would continue to use their motorcycle helmet after dropping it, even though there would be a risk that it had suffered internal damage that cannot be seen. And while nearly half of bikers (45%) will initially spend more than $340 on their motorcycle helmet, 38% opt for one finished in fashionable – but hard to spot – black, ahead of more visible options such as blue (14%) and yellow (6%).

Rebecca Donohue, head of marketing at Carole Nash, said: “While it’s encouraging to see that bikers are making an initial investment in their lids, we urge them to not see this as a one-time expense. We would even recommend bikers who have just dropped their helmets to get them checked out. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry.”
