Bill to repeal Tennessee helmet law defeated

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Tennessee senate committee voted to keep a lid on it March 26, voting down a bill that would have repealed the state’s helmet law for adults 21 and older.

The Automobile Club of America opposed the repeal, saying it would lead to more highway deaths. A survey AAA conducted in October found 91 percent of Tennesseans were in favor of the current helmet law.

Garry Griffith, Griffith Cycle, told WTVC he had a close call on a motorcycle and a helmet saved his life. "Well they'll save your life. You've got nothing between you and the road and they've saved my life before."

Iron Horse Helmets: I am sorry, it looks like your helmet was just ordered 3 days ago. I don't understand why you have asked it there was an issue. You did not express it and the helmet has only been buffed once. Chrome helmets can't leave until they have been buffed three time.

We have never (in 15 years) had someone surprise us asking if there was "an issue" after three days. Especially for a helmet that is hand crafted and so expensive.

I think it is best if we refund you and go our separate ways.

Fed funding for motorcycle-only checkpoints to end?

U.S. Senators Shaheen (D-N.H.), Johnson (R-Wis.), Ayotte (R-N.H.), Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Collins (R-Maine) have introduced S.B. 127, the Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act, which would prohibit federal funding for motorcycle-only checkpoints, limiting the implementation of these discriminatory checkpoints nationwide.

During the past few years, federal, state and local governments spent many hundreds of thousands of dollars on motorcycle-only checkpoints, funds that could have been better spent on programs to prevent distracted driving, increase rider education programs or improve motorist awareness. I've never been pulled into one of these checkpoints, but I have friends who have, particularly in New York State on the major arteries leading to the annual Americade Rally in Lake George. While I have no sympathy for those riding unregistered or uninsured bikes, or with unlawfully loud pipes, motorcycle-only checkpoints is in my view an unlawfully discriminatory practice. If a governmental entity feels the need to check motor vehicles for certain compliance, then pull all non-commercial (commercial is subject to different rules) vehicular traffic into a given checkpoint, not just motorcycles.

Have you ever been to Sweeden? 

Sweden is  known for long legged blonds and the Southern Bikers Motorcycle Club.

Sure, they have done a few other things since they were founded in 1397.  Here are some interesting facts about Sweden:

Sweden is the 3rd largest EU country in land area, after France and Spain.

Sweden is one of the homelands of the Germanic ethnicity and culture. The Goths, the Suevirs and the Norses (Vikings) all trace their origin back to Sweden (as well as Norway and Denmark for the latter).

In the 9th and 10th centuries, Swedish Vikings invaded and settled in parts of Eastern Europe as far as Constantinople and the Caspian Sea. They founded the first kingdom of Russia. All the Tsars of Russia until the last one, Nicholas II, were of Swedish Viking descent.

Bill to Free Nebraska Motorcyclists From Helmet Law Advances

LINCOLN, Neb.-- A bill to repeal Nebraska's mandatory helmet law for motorcyclists will be debated by the full Legislature.

The eight-member Transportation and Telecommunications Committee voted 6-2 on Thursday to advance the measure by Sen. Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins.

Committee members added an amendment that would still require riders younger than 21 to wear helmets.

Lawmakers have tried to repeal the 1989 helmet law since it went into effect, saying motorcyclists have a right to choose on matters of personal safety.

A similar measure advanced to first-round debate last year but failed to gain enough votes to break a filibuster.

Bloomfield has designated the test his priority bill, increasing the odds that lawmakers discuss it this year.

Bill would repeal Nevada's mandatory motorcycle helmet law

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) - It's been discussed in the Silver State several times, and on Thursday state lawmakers heard arguments about it again.

If passed, Senate Bill 142 would make helmets optional for motorcyclists who are at least 21 years old and have had a motorcycle license for a minimum of one year.

Proponents say it's about freedom. Those opposed say changing the law is simply too dangerous.

Pee-Larr Handley, president of the Motorcycle Awareness and Rider Safety organization, said he wouldn't be alive today if he hadn't been wearing a motorcycle during a crash a few years back.

“My take on the [bill] is, I think it's dangerous,” he said.

The bill was introduced by state Sen. Don Gustavson, R-Sparks. Handley called the legislation dangerous.

“You can take a fall at walking speed, hit your head and kill yourself. You add speed to the equation, you're increasing your chances of a fatality,” Handley said.

Riders in some instances argue against helmets for safety reasons. It's been claimed that if a motorcyclist crashes with a helmet on, his or her chances of getting a spinal injury are increased.

Those opposed to helmet laws have also complained that the gear is confining. Handley said that what saved him when he crashed in Utah was a modular helmet.

“You stop at a stop light and push this button and flip it up, you have peripheral vision, you got open face, you can talk to other riders. When it's time to go you're ready to go. Flip it back down and it locks in place. You have the protection of a full face helmet again,” Handley said.

Some riders have suggested they can't afford helmets.

“Well, if you can't afford the gear and you can't afford a helmet, maybe you shouldn't be riding,” Handley said.

While Handley's helmet retails for about $900, BMW Motorcycles of Las Vegas has helmets that start at $75.

This is Gustavson's eighth attempt to repeals Nevada's mandatory motorcycle helmet law. It has been on the books since 1972.
