Tornado Motorcycle Helmets

BIRMINGHAM -- UAB researchers say that motorcycle helmets, football helmets and bicycle helmets offer a practical, inexpensive solution to reducing the risk of head injuries during a tornado and are calling on the federal Centers for Disease Control to incorporate the advice in its tornado preparedness messages.

"It's such a common sense idea that we wonder why it hasn't caught on," said Scott Crawford, an epidemiologist and one of authors of "Safety Helmets: A Practical Inexpensive Solution for Reducing the Risk of Head Injuries Resulting from Tornadoes."

Crawford and a team from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Injury Control Research Center reviewed historical tornado research and Jefferson County coroner reports of April 27 tornado victims in preparing the "commentary" paper posted on its website.

The center is partnering with the Alabama Head Injury Foundation to develop a statewide public awareness campaign.

The report notes that the CDC's Emergency Prevention and Response website instructs people to "protect your head with anything available -- even your hands" but never mentions helmets.

"To us it is obvious that protective measures suggested by the CDC, while well-intended, are nonetheless insufficient for protecting against possible head and neck injuries," the UAB report stated.

CDC officials would not comment directly on UAB's report, said Melissa Dankel, CDC spokeswoman.

"But I can tell you that anything that can reduce injuries and death merits further evaluation," she said.

A review of 50 years of literature found that head injuries were the most common cause of tornado deaths, said Russ Fine, the center's director and one of the co-authors of the report. "You don't need extensive studies to call for this, what you need is common sense," he said.

A Birmingham News review of the Jefferson County coroner reports published last month found that at least 11 of the 21 deaths could be attributed to a blow to the head or broken neck. The county medical examiner, Dr. Robert Brissie, who has said helmets could have saved some of those lives, is also a co-author of the report.

A motorcycle helmet with a face shield and neck support would be the ideal helmet. But any helmet is better than no helmet, Fine said.

Snow Helmet first, Motorcycle Helmet Second

Helmets have a relatively simple—if not imperative—job as far as gear goes: 1) don't fall off and 2) prevent major brain damage. Given its limited roster of tasks, it'd be easy to assume that helmet innovation has probably hit a standstill by now. WRONG. Enter the Giro Combyn snow-sports helmet: a soft-shell helmet that utilizes an impact-absorbing liner that Giro promises can take all sorts of hits over, and over, and over again.

The new type of lining, Vinyl Nitrile, is soft and flexible unlike traditional expandable helmet liners. So where most helmets are pretty much done after one hard blow, the Combyn snaps right back into shape, ready to go again. While there's no set number of impacts the helmet can take, the cool part is that the user can send the helmet in to Giro and have it analyzed for its current durability—totally free of charge.

Face Mask Fashion

We have no clue who this Jack Darvis guy is, but he seems to think that our half camouflage neoprene facemasks have something to do with style. We had no idea. I guess it proves you have no style when you only wear blue jeans and an iron horse helmets T-shirt, but we are happy to see that iron horse helmets sells stylish gear.

All you little Beet Boppers are welcome here

Hillsborough Deputies looking for armed robbers wearing motorcycle helmets

Hillsborough County Deputies are looking for two robbers, who like to wear motorcycle helmets.

Investigators believe the men held up three businesses last week. They say the robbers held up the Direct General Insurance Company on Adamo Drive, January 18th at 9:51 a.m. Five hours later, they hit the Metro PCS store on Kingsway Road in Brandon. The next day, they robbed Causeway Self Storage on 86th Street.

Surveillance videos show only one robber at a time. In each case, the robber is wearing a black and silver motorcycle helmet and a black jacket. One of the men appears to be 35-40 years old, 5'11" to 6'1", 180-200 pounds, with a neatly trimmed goatee. The other appears younger, 25-30 years old, 6'1" to 6'3", stocky build, 220-230 pounds. They were both driving a grey 1999-2000 Isuzu Rodeo.

They also both carried a Derringer gun with black grips and a silver, vertical double barrel. Anyone with any information should call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at 247-8200. You can also leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477), report online at www.crimestopperstb.com, or text "CSTB plus your tip" to C-R-I-M-E-S (274637).

I Don't Get It

We laser engrave a lot of motorcycle helmets. The one thing that most of these engravings have in common is that we have no idea what the engraving means. Take the image below. We engraved POOF on a motorcycle helmet for Bart Bryant from Dover, TN. Bart, please tell us "What does it mean?"

Mapping our customers

We were playing around on the internet today and told we found the coolest new software.  Basically we are able to take the ZIP Codes of our customers and map the addresses on a map.

Below is a map of our customers from last night.

Maybe this will answer the question that we get every day, because as you can see we do ship international orders. Maybe one day they will also make a map that shows your time in transit. But I'm sure that map would be wrong.

Why Didn't I Think of That?

Once again, another great idea that I didn't think of.  You might of noticed that we sell the "If you can read this the bitch fell off" t-shirts.  I know that we are not the only company in the world that sells it and that is OK, since it is not our original idea.

But today, a genius customer of ours came up with his own T-shirt design in our "Design your own T-shirt section."  This genius ordered a shirt that says "IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOUR BITCH FELL OFF."
Get it?  YOUR BITCH.  I told you he was a genius.

So now, get ready, because you can purchase a IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOUR BITCH FELL OFF Shirt just by clicking on the words in the link.

That's right, we stole "If you can read this the bitch fell off" and we are also stealing "If you can read this YOUR bitch off."

Truth in Advertising

We pride ourselves on honesty here at Iron Horse Helmets.  We are probably not 100% honest but we are at least 90% honest. That is why we were surprised when we received a e-mail from KC Mok (in Thailand) this morning regarding his DOT German Motorcycle Helmet.  His e-mail is as follows:

you gotta be kidding...Plush moisture absorbent interior???
The DOT German Black Has:
Fiberglass shell
German styling
D-ring closure
Meets or exceeds D.O.T. standards
Superior strength
Rubber Trim / Steel Rivets
Plush Moisture Absorbent Interior
Leather Black finishWeight: 1.15 pounds
Available in a
ll sizes XS-XXL

It seems like Mr. Mok did not read the description at all.  We say this motorcycle helmet makes you look like a dork, we say you are a chicken if you wear it.  We can't be more honest about our thoughts on German DOT Motorcycle Helmets:

Product Description

Let's face it; buying the DOT German Motorcycle Helmet just proves that you are too chicken to ride with a Novelty German Motorcycle Helmet. You are probably the same type of person who goes to the gym and does not use steroids. What's the use? Sometimes you need to go all in. What do you have to live for anyway? Taxes, grandkids, giving a full body massage to your grandfather. The DOT German Motorcycle Helmet might save your life but is it worth it if you look like a dork?

Iron Horse Helmets University of Business Development Management Leadership

Remember when we had a lesson on motorcycle helmet stickers here at the Iron Horse Helmets University of Business Development Management Leadership? Well, if you do, it probably means you have a brain problem, because there never was a lesson on helmet stickers. But still, having helmet stickers is an important part of being a biker. But you can’t just hold onto them. You want to put them on your helmet too!
Seems simple enough. You peal and stick, right? Sure, IF YOU WANT THEM TO COME OFF IN THE FIRST RAIN! Clean your helmet first. Here’s how:
1. Wet a cloth
2. Wipe the cloth across your motorcycle helmet
3. Let the helmet dry
4. Now you can peal and stick your motorcycle helmet sticker onto your motorcycle helmet.
5. Ride on!

Battery Mates

Finally, a way to make the most of all those 'A20' batteries.

Back in the heady sweepstakes days of the late 80s, you signed up for any contest that could win you a "Lifetime Supply" of anything. So when you finally ended up winning one, you were somewhat taken aback that it was a lifetime supply of generic brand 'A20' batteries. You know, the kind that go in a garage door opener.  You've had an awfully hard time making the most of your winnings -- until now.

You see, our fiber optic helmet mohawks are 'A20' battery hogs. The Fiber Optic Mohawks only hold one batter at a time, but you might to carry a spare since they run out of juice in about 3 hours of continues use.. Simply put: They are idea portable stereos for the lifetime-supply-of-'A20'-battery-sweepstakes-winner crowd.

It's a nice bonus that they're also a great-looking helmet accessory.  But let's be honest: It's all about blasting through those 'A20' batteries.

For some reason they also feature a on and off switch, but that seems a little weird. How is someone with an infinite number of 'A20' batteries supposed to make the most of their prize that way?

Hypothetical Question:

Hypothetical Question:
You are a famous photography and you need to shoot a model who is defiantly a "butherface"...You know, she's hot "but not in her face".

That is where Iron Horse Helmets comes to the rescue with our motorcycle helmet horns.  We were able to help out Jack at Adpix and I must say that the picture turned out great.

Ladies, please don't think we are sexist, we would of provided Jack with the same helmet if it was a guy, but we probably would not put the picture on our blog.

Ronald Reagan at Iron Horse Helmets

We love many things here at Iron Horse Helmets, but we don't love many people.  We really hate Oliver Stone and we really hate that fat guy who makes those liberal documentaries.    Do you know who we love?  We love Ronald Reagan!  That is why we hired a Ronald Reagan impersonator to impersonate on our new phone system greeting.  Please click the link about to listen to the magic that happens when you call us at Iron Horse Helmets.

VA Might Abolish Helmet Law

LURAY, Va. -- A new bill in the Virginia General Assembly proposes to change the law when it comes to wearing your helmet on a motorcycle.
Del. Ben Cline introduced the bill that proposes people, who are at least 21 years old, shouldn't be required to wear a helmet at all times while on a motorcycle.
Chief of the Luray Police Department Page Campbell said he disagrees with the bill and that all people at any age should always wear a helmet.
"You may have more experience when it comes to driving, but you can't protect that which you can 't see,” said Chief Campbell, “And that means that we can be the safest drivers in the world, and yet that person coming up beside us, behind us, they may not be."
Campbell said he's seen a lot of accidents in the 30 years he's been working in law enforcement. He said motorcyclists should always wear a helmet for safety.

For our Philippians (all two of you)

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will implement the Motorcycle Helmet Act next month with or without the help of local governments.
“We will implement the law as the main office ordered. It will be a nationwide campaign. Our enforcers will be around to watch riders,” said LTO-7 Regional Director Aguilos.
But motorcycle riders won’t be penalized immediately if they are wearing full-face helmets as required by the new law, he said.
If the helmets just lack the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) or Philippine Standard (PS) stickers, they will given a warning and advised to go to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial office to get the sticker.
They have until Dec. 31, 2012 to comply with this Helmet Act requirement, said Aguilos.
But those caught not wearing helmets at all or improper head gear risk a fine of P1,500 for the first offense and confiscation of their driver’s license.
Violators will pay P3,000 for the second offense.
Third-time violators will pay P5,000 and P10,000 plus their driver’s license will be confiscated for the fourth and succeeding offenses.
Starting January 1, 2013, violators will be slapped fines, Aguilos said.
The LTO-7 chief reminded helmet manufacturers to make sure that their products meet quality standards set by the DTI.
“We’d like to urge the public to follow the law since this is for everyone’s good,” said Aguilos.
He denied that the law is “anti-poor” as charged by Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.
“If they can buy a motorcycle, how much more a helmet?” Aguillos said.
DTI Cebu provincial director Nelia Navarro agreed, saying the law will protect motorcycle-for-hire (habal-habal) drivers and their passengers.
Navarro said she plans to send a copy of the guidelines of the law to Mayor Rama.
“If they really have a problem with the law they can address it to Congress, which passed the law.
DTI is only mandated to check the helmets and accredit. They are barking at the wrong tree,” said Navarro.
Since DTI started the campaign in June 26, Navarro said over 5,000 motorists have processed their accreditation by paying the 100 processing fee and the P1.25 for the ICC sticker.
“The number of people coming to our office everyday is increasing. We are just following the law,” Navarro said.

2013

Wow, 2013 is here.  I feel like we just celebrated the year 2000.  Iron Horse Motorcycle Helmets wants to wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year.  I personally think the whole happy new year thing is dumb and amaturish, but happy new year anyway.
