Motorcycle Helmet Camera & Bluetooth

Airwheel, the producer of high-tech scooters and mobility aids, just released a slick helmet with a built-in camera.

According to a press release published in Digital Journal, “The Airwheel C6 cool motorcycle helmet, as the latest product gives the riders much fun and excitement. With an Airwheel C6 we can record everything efficiently and effectively even though we are riding or doing Extreme sports.”

Available in carbon fiber, "colorful pattern", or genuine leather covering, the Airwheel C6 helmet is equipped with a built-in high-definition camera with a 120-degree field of view that can shoot stills or video. According to the company statement, it's an “intelligent helmet” that also offers high quality audio on the road, “which is totally different from listening to the music motionlessly. That’s because the scenery changes every moment and the rider never knows what will happen in the next second. This uncertainty is actually the meaning of life.”

The source of the music is certain, however. The built-in Bluetooth connection also allows the rider hands-free phone calls for convenience and safety. The helmet is specifically designed with a windbreak and “de-noiser microphone” to filter external environment noise. The C6 also features a flashing caution light on the back, which in low light “will keep flashing to remind the rear vehicle and pedestrian.”

HUD Motorcycle Helmet – extending the rider’s reality

Heads-up displays (HUD) are nothing new in the car world, these days. That HUDs are functional pieces of kit cannot be denied. Having the necessary vehicle information displayed right in the driver’s field of view without having to take thier eyes off the road is a safety benefit. But things are a little more difficult for motorcyclists while wearing a helmet.

Hailing from Poland, Seemore is the latest in putting forward a solution for a motorcycle helmet HUD, following in the footsteps of BMW Motorrad and the now defunct Skully, as well as the Intelligent Cranium iC-R. Studies from the University of Michigan have shown that information absorption can be reduced by up to 1.5 seconds using a HUD.

Seemore’s solution connects with the rider’s smartphone to display information in the top right corner of the helmet visor using a prism. A module containing the display unit, controller and battery – claimed to be good for 12 hours – is installed inside the helmet, and uses Bluetooth for connectivity.

Aside from the usual speed readouts, the HUD can also display navigation instructions, traffic information, points of interest such as fuel stations, and the like. The HUD also displays notifications for incoming calls and messages, but there is no provision for reply.

An interesting feature useful for those on group rides is the ability to display the location of every rider, and the distance between them. Should one rider drop beyond a certain distance, the Seemore HUD app will come on and notify the group of the location of each rider.

A rear view camera can also be supported, installed on the bike and connected via Bluetooth. Seemore has no plans to make its HUD available to the public, but dealing directly with helmet manufacturers as the module needs to be designed into the helmet for safety reasons.

As Motorcycle Helmet Laws Ease, Injuries Increase

You know how people look so cool and carefree riding down the road on a motorcycle without a helmet on? And you kind of feel jealous they're doing that while you're stuck in a minivan listening to Kidz Bop. But you know what? You're so, so, so much safer, and so is that other motorcyclist looking maybe less carefree and actually wearing a helmet.

A new study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery demonstrates that motorcycle helmet laws do a lot to prevent people's skulls and faces from getting crushed in motorcycle accidents. That might seem like a no-brainer, but thanks to the scientific method applied to the State of Michigan's recent decision to relax its motorcycle helmet laws, researchers now have a lot of hard evidence to back up what we might otherwise assume.

In 2012, Michigan eased up on its motorcycle helmet laws. Prior to that date the state had required every motorcyclist to wear a helmet. But after the 2012 changes signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder, some people can now let the wind ruffle their hair if they're over 21 and have adequate experience and insurance coverage. The study looked at the craniomaxillofacial (CMF) injuries seen in 29 Michigan hospitals over the course of six years — three years before the relaxed helmet laws, and three years after. A total of 4,643 motorcycle trauma patients were treated during this period.

The researchers found that under the new law, the proportion of motorcycle accident victims not wearing helmets more than doubled, from 20 percent to 44 percent. Unhelmeted patients were twice as likely to sustain CMF injuries, had higher injury severity scores, and sustained more of all types of facial injuries. Those not wearing helmets before and after the law was passed generally had higher blood alcohol levels.

Overall, the research team found that a motorcyclist's risk of CMF injuries were cut in half if they wore a helmet, and if everyone were to wear a helmet, the incidents of facial and head injuries would decrease by 30 percent.
