Jake Loves Our Shirts

Iron Horse,

I just received my order last night of some t-shirts I ordered from you guys. I wanted to thank you for the amazingly fast delivery and great shirts. This was sort of a trial run to make sure the t-shirts were good. Nowadays I order t-shirts on the internet and most of the time they come to me and a size XL is the size of a medium for some Euro trash consumer. Not to mention I am usually paying $25 or more for a friggin t-shirt. Your shirts are full and not tapered like everyone who wants to show off their no existent biceps and chest. I am 5'10" 225 and finally, I got a shirt that does not fit me like some spandex spanx. I wore my black rifles matter shirt to the gym this morning, that of course goes over well in the people's republic of Connecticut.

I will be ordering more from you guys now that I know the shirts are not made for some skinny bitch. Fortunately, you guys cater to a little different clientele. Keep up the great work. Thanks again.

Jake

We lost Another Customer

An Oregon gangster found guilty of using a sandblaster on a man to remove his tattoos and inflicting other torture will be older than 100 years before he is eligible for release from prison.

According to The Oregonian, David Ray Bartol, 45, was sentenced to 55 years for torturing his enemies in Oregon.

Bartol and an accomplice injected heroin into Nicholas Remington's neck in December 2012, the newspaper reports. Prosecutors said Bartol put a motorcycle helmet (I hope not ours) on Remington's head and shot at it with a gun. Prosecutors also said Bartol used an industrial belt sander to remove one of Remington's tattoos.

Police found Remington almost dead in the street, wearing only boxer shorts in December 2012, according to the newspaper. Remington survived Bartol's torture.

During his two-week trial over the summer, Bartol, with the help of accomplices, was also accused of kidnapping another man in February 2013 and torturing him in a spray-paint booth of an auto body shop, The Oregonian reports.

Police found Bartol's second victim, Ronald Murphy, with two gunshot wounds in his abdomen. Although Murphy was able to recover from the shooting, authorities told the newspaper he was found dead two years later in his car from a heroin overdose, in February 2015.

According to prosecutors, Bartol attempted to kill the men because he thought they would 'snitch' on him.

Bartol was found guilty on 24 counts, including attempted aggravated murder, according to The Oregonian.

Before the 55-year sentence, Bartol was already serving 18 years in prison on a conviction for home invasion committed in January 2013. As The Oregonian noted, the existing sentence would make Bartol about 110 years old before he became eligible for release.

Bartol may not spend decades in prison however, as he may face the death penalty after being accused of stabbing another inmate to death in June 2013. According to The Statesman Journal, Bartol is facing murder charges after allegedly stabbing Gavin Siscel to death in the Marion County jail with a homemade knife. Marion County, Ore., includes the state capital, Salem.

The newspaper reports Siscel had been in jail for a week on a contempt charge after mouthing off in court. Authorities do not have a motive as to why Bartol stabbed Siscel.

Bartol is expected to go to trial later this month for Siscel's death, according to The Oregonian, but it is not yet certain whether the state will request the death penalty.

Video: Mom rear ends son on motorcycle

A motorcyclist was hit by his own mother after she warned him to “watch out for idiots."

The Seattle PI reports that a man named Jake Schoeppach posted a Youtube video taken Thursday of him being rear-ended by his own mother while driving his motorcycle.

The video comes from a GoPro on Schoeppach’s motorcycle helmet. Schoeppach’s mom bids him farewell in a parking lot and tells him, “Drive safe, watch out for idiots.” The accident occurs about 3:27 in the video.

Sometimes you need to dress like an adult who's going to work.
Sometimes you need to dress like an adult who's just trying to be tough.
Sometimes you need to dress like an adult who's hoping to find the happy medium between those two points.
The trick is finding a motorcycle helmet that works for all three.

Customer question

Hello, I am interested in the novelty helmets. I understand that they are not DOT approved. How thick is the padding and outer shell? Also, do they offer any impact protection for activities other than motorcycle riding?

Thank you,

John

Dear John (get it),
No, you would die pretty quick if you got in a wreck with a novelty helmet on.

Here is an image of the difference:

Michigan motorcycle deaths jump after 2012 helmet repeal

During the year after Michigan allowed motorcyclists 21 and older to ride without motorcycle helmets, the fatality rate among the bareheaded riders was double that of their helmeted counterparts, according to a study released Wednesday by the University of Michigan and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

“We still saw an increase in head injuries and that can have a big impact on motorcyclists after the crash and to their families," said Jessica Cicchino, IIHS vice president for research and co-author of the study.

The research covered the 12 months immediately prior to and after April 2012, when Michigan repealed its universal motorcycle helmet law.

The study examined police-reported motorcycle crash deaths and head-injury data. For that two-year period there were 7,235 reports of riders who crashed in the state. Of those, 1,094 were hospitalized at trauma centers.

Over the two-year period, the number of motorcycle fatalities overall did not increase significantly, but the fatality rate among unhelmeted riders who crashed was 5.4%, nearly double the 2.8% rate among helmeted riders.

The percentage of the trauma patients with head injuries increased 14% in the year after repeal. They were 17% less likely to suffer concussion-related injuries, but 38% more of them incurred skull fractures.

A separate study of one Michigan trauma center published earlier this year in the Journal of Surgery found the average care given to unhelmeted riders cost about $28,000, or 32% higher than care cost for helmeted riders.

Under the law, those choosing to ride without a motorcycle helmet must carry at least $20,000 of accident insurance.

If there's a silver lining, Cicchino said it's that 75% of motorcyclists 21 or older still choose to wear amotorcycle helmet.

"We found from other research, for example, in Texas and Kentucky, that percentage still wearing motorcycle helmets dropped to about 65%," Cicchino said.

Advocates for repealing the motorcycle helmet law argued it would boost tourism. If it has, fortunately, those visiting riders aren't getting injured at a very high rate. Of all motorcycle crashes studied by IIHS and U-M, 95% of the bikes were registered in Michigan.

As of today 31 states allow those 21 and older to ride without helmets, while 19 states and the District of Columbia require motorcycle helmets for all motorcyclists.

Motorcyclist dies in crash, was not wearing helmet, investigators say

Did he not see yesterday's post?

A man riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle died in a crash Saturday night, Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans said.

He said 56-year-old Gary Wayne Laster was found on Parkins Mill Road shortly around 9:10 p.m. and was not wearing a helmet.

Investigators said Laster had a female passenger riding with him who was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The Greenville City Police Department and its reconstruction unit, along with the Greenville County Coroner's Office are investigating what happened.

An exam scheduled for Monday will determine the cause and manner of death, Evans said.

Motorcycle Helmet HUD System

Here we go again.  Another company is going to try a Motorcycle Helmet HUD system.

Chances are that head-up display (HUD) systems are the next big thing in motorcycle helmet tech, with several startups developing such systems. Seemore's HUD module is designed to be factory-fitted to helmets, offering an abundance of features that include a group interaction tool.

The last decade has seen several attempts at bringing in-helmet display systems to the market, starting from the SportVue way back in 2004. Today's offerings range from Reevu's rear view camera display to Intelligent Cranium's tech-laden helmet, and have even attracted the interest of major manufacturers like BMW Motorrad.

Based in Wroclaw, Poland, Seemore is developing a HUD system that puts the rider's smartphone in the center, using its resources to create an augmented reality environment. The module itself contains the display unit, a controller and a battery – all of which are installed inside the helmet. Connecting via Bluetooth to a smartphone app, this HUD transparently displays its information on the upper right corner of the helmet visor.

In contrast with several other HUD solutions that display at the bottom part of the visor, Seemore based its choice on tests ran by the University of Michigan which suggested that humans are able to get information much faster if it is presented at the upper part compared to lower or middle part. Allegedly saving up to 1.5 seconds in information absorption time can make a huge difference while riding at speed.

The display module is placed in the upper front part of the Motorcycle helmet and projects its content through a 10 x 10 x 35 mm (0.4 x 0.4 x 1.4 in) prism. The module is powered by a small battery that's good for up to 12 hours of continuous use and be charged via USB in less than three hours.

According to Seemore's business plan, the kit will not be available directly to the public, but will instead be installed by Motorcycle helmet manufacturers in their models. This choice has been made primarily for safety reasons since adding electronic components inside a Motorcycle helmet requires scrutiny to ensure that these cannot cause injuries in case of an impact.

Using the smartphone as the brain of the whole operation allows for a variety of features to be displayed. Web and GPS resources are used to project information on current speed, speed limits and camera warnings, traffic information, navigation, and a configurable list of points of interest (petrol stations, parking areas etc). The display can also include notifications of incoming phone calls and text messages, although there is no prevision for calling or replying to calls while riding – which would eventually contradict the very essence of a system designed to help the rider keep their focus on the road at all times.

The basic HUD kit can also support a rear view camera (to be sold separately) which can be placed on the motorcycle and connect wirelessly via Bluetooth to transfer its panoramic view to the display.

Finally, a very interesting and innovative feature serves group interaction by displaying information on the location of every member of the group, and distances between members. Should one rider lose the rest of the pack, the navigation will come automatically on and inform on the whereabouts of the others.

For the time being this is all the information available on the Seemore HUD. The smartphone app has not been released yet, but we do know that it will be available for both iOS and Android devices. The first commercially available helmet with the Seemore module is expected in mid-2017.

"Right now we are discussing with three major European Motorcycle helmet manufacturers. The price of the kit is still under discussion with them, so I can't share more at this moment," said Seemore CEO, Grzegorz Palmer to New Atlas.
