ANOTHER Bank Robber

It has happened again!  There is another bank robber using our neoprene face masks.

The last bank robber used the crashed test dummy face mask, you might remember us blogging about him. The new bank robber uses our bio-mechanical wnfm074 face mask.  Our boy Scott got a call from the Chicago Office of the FBI last night and was told all about it.

This bank robber was also wearing a black hoodie.  It just so happens that we also sell black hoodies.  We are thinking about changing our name to Iron Horse Helmets & Bank Robber Supplies.

Motorcycle Helmet Laws

Jason Ellis sent us this awesome Motorcycle Helmet Law chart that you can print out and take on a trip with you.  Jason was even nice enough to put our logo on it.  We would like to thank Jason for being so awesome!

Feel free to print this out, copy it, or use it however you like.

Don't Tip our Painters

We just received a call today from a man named Marc Pomeroy.  Marc wanted us to charge his credit card $50 extra so he could tip Michael our Airbrusher.

Iron Horse Helmets is not a strip club!  We are about 2 miles from a strip club, but WE are not a strip club.  Our painters do not work for tips.  It was nice of Marc to offer, but painters are a group of people you don't spoil with tips.

We pay our painters very little and make them work darn near slave house.  These guys come in around 4pm and leave around 8pm.  That is a long 4 hour work day!  You want to spoil them and let them know how the real world works?  Not on my shift!

T-Shirts T-Shirts T-Shirts

We sell many T-shirts! But we usually don't sell 9 T-shirts to just one person.

Dave Smith (yes, that is his real name) bought these 9 T-shirts for himself. One would think that Dave was buying gifts for friends, but Dave said he is not.

Iron Horse Helmets would like to salute Mr. Smith and we will be happy to salute any other customer who purchases 9 shirts just for themselves. We love spendthrifts!

Top 3 helmets to protect yourself during a tornado

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Peak tornado season is fast approaching and safety advocates are reminding people to add helmets to your tornado safety plan.

Any helmet designed to protect your head from injury is better than no helmet, according to the UAB Injury Control Research Center.

But not all helmets are created equal, and we list three top choices below.

But first some background:

Following the April 27 tornadoes which killed at least 250 people in Alabama, there emerged a growing interest in strapping on a helmet as a tornado survival strategy -- long used by a few -- but little publicized.

Although scientific evidence was lacking, the anecdotal evidence -- and common sense -- dictated that a helmet would be a useful added layer of protection -- considering most tornado victims die of head injury.

A Birmingham News/AL.com review of the Jefferson County coroner reports published on Dec. 5, 2011 found 11 of the 18 deaths in the county from the tornado could be attributed to a blow to the head or broken neck. County medical examiner Robert Brissie said helmets could have saved some of those lives.

There were anecdotal reports of those who survived or who lessened their injuries and credited that to their helmet use. One case was that of an 8-year-old Pleasant Grove boy wearing a softball helmet with a mask who survived being thrown through the air as high as the telephone wires, family members reported.

UAB researchers, along with Brissie, in January of 2012 came out with a review of 50 years of literature, and looked at the deaths in Jefferson County. In the report, the Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) said helmets are a practical, relatively inexpensive way to reduce the risk of head injuries during a tornado.
helmet4.JPGSoftball or baseball helmets with a face shield are a good choice for head protection during a tornado. The UAB safety advocates called on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- which dispenses advice on tornado safety -- to instruct people to wear helmets. As it was, the CDC website at the time urged people to "protect your head with anything available -- even your hands" but never mentioned helmets.

A wave of publicity followed, and questions from news organizations to the CDC -- whose national mission is to reduce injury and death -- had an effect. In May of 2012 the CDC acknowledged on their website for the first time that using helmets could be an option when sheltering for tornadoes.

The CDC reminds everyone that reaction time may be short so don't go looking for a helmet at the expense of finding shelter. Having a ready-to-use helmet in your safe place makes the most sense.

So if most are now on board about the use of helmets for tornado protection, it raises the question: What kind of helmet?

Using the analysis of the ICRC that the best helmets for protection would be those that offer head, neck and face protection, here's a list of the top helmets:

1) An American Motorcycle Association-approved helmet with a full face shield providing head and neck protection is the top helmet that is easily accessible, agreed both Gerald McGwin, director of the ICRC, and Russ Fine, the recently retired former director, who was there when the helmet report came out. A good motorcycle helmet can be expensive, costing many hundreds of dollars.

2) Football helmet. A football helmet is designed to protect the head and face, including the sides of the head. It should be one approved for full contact. A good football helmet can cost more than $200.

3) Some softball and baseball helmets, such as the one worn by the 8-year-ol Pleasant Grove boy, which cover most of the head and have a face guard. These helmets can be bought for well under $100.

Bicycle helmets also are typically less expensive than a motorcycle or football helmet and offer some measure of protection. But they don't cover the full head and do not have face protection. Other helmets that might offer great protection during a tornado, but may not be as accessible, include firefighter's helmets, construction hardhats, and military/combat helmets.

"What is abundantly clear and which does not require years of research to prove is that protecting the head and neck with the use of any type of helmet designed for protective purposes, and not simply for costume or cosmetic purposes is far, far better than not wearing a helmet," Fine said in a written statement.

Motorcycle Helmet Pigtails

Tonya Miller loves our pink motorcycle helmet pigtails. She orders a pair from us every year.....Every year that is except for this year because we ran out.

She sent us the e-mail that follows:
You guys are one of the original makers (of the helmet pigtails.) I have had these on my helmet since I started riding 4 years ago. Your companies pigtails are waaaay better then the other ones, which look homemade. Thank you so much. I will check back. :(kinda sucks they are becoming so popular. Good for you though! Thanks again!)

 Here is our response:
Thanks, the other ones look homemade because they are. We make ours in a factory with slave labor Chinese ladies. We pay them with and they are happy.

Addams Family Motorcycle Helmet

I can't believe we forgot to post the picture of this Motorcycle Helmet.  We saw this motorcycle Helmet at a motorcycle art show called Skull Canvas - A Gallery of Cranial Protection.

The show was held at Barber Motorsports Park during their Vintage Motorcycle Festival on October 12th and 13th. The display featured more than 50 helmets from around the world ending with the helmets being sold at a VIP party. Proceeds from the silent auction went back to the artists that created the helmets.

The show was really cool.  We found this video on Youtube so you can see all the helmet art.

Helmet Artists Included: Jason Prouty, Jeremy Kemp, Larry Gardinier, Bryan Fuller, Terrence Morrison, Richard King, Ryan Curtis, Ken Ruzic, Paul Erlandson, D.Jay Gillespie, Joel Nelson, Jaime Wim Trevino

Creative Motorcycle Helmets

Have you ever seen the images of the motorcycle helmets above?  We have!  We get these images e-mailed to us at least 3 times a month.  It is always the same question:

Do you make this motorcycle helmet?  Do you know where I can get one?

Before you e-mail us these images again, please go to Youtube and type in the words Photo Shop.  These motorcycle helmets do not really exist, they are all photoshopped.

Can we paint helmets like this?  Probably, but you might need a bigger wallet!

Iron Horse Helmets Business Expansion Plan

Businesses are like flowers. They start out small and blossom. The only difference is that businesses don’t have to start underground and also flowers are plants whereas businesses are businesses. But still, the same concept applies: you want to grow your business as much as possible, and that means adding some new departments.
What kinds of departments, you wonder? Well, we here at the Iron Horse Helmets University of Business Management Development Leadership have some suggestions. Check it out:

  • A comma creation department
  • A mysterious welding department
  • A water cooler testing department (you can never be too safe!)
  • A frozen foods department
  • A rocket department (wouldn't it be cool to say your business has a rocket?!)
  • A “let’s go outside every 10 minutes to make sure the office is still tied to the dock” department (only necessary for businesses that happen in boats!)
  • A knitting department
  • A Mark Ketting department (only guys named Mark Ketting are allowed!)
  • A knife-dulling department
  • A clock setting and monitoring department
  • A mail smelling department (you can never be too safe!)
  • A wax department
  • A kreeative department (you know it’s creative because they spell it creatively!)
  • A love department
  • An imaginary department that’ll come to life if you just believe
  • A butt department (you can never be too safe!)
  • Department of Redundancy Department
  • A department to retroactively deem ideas bad ideas

    Fashion

Southern weather will make your head spin!  With temperatures in the 40’s one day and 70’s the next, it’s hard to know how to prepare your wardrobe for the unexpected weather.

We are going to make regular blog posts regarding the fashion and lack of fashion of a one BedfordSmith.  You might remember Bedford from many videos on our Youtube page.  Bedford does many things around Iron Horse Helmets, but he is one of the greatest lunch eaters ever.  Bedford prides himself of his lunch eating ability, although he is a little worried about his addiction to food.

    What Bedford's wearing:

    Jacket - Norman Hilton
    Pants - Brooks Brothers
    Shoes - Alden
    Shirt - Joseph A. Banks
    Belt - Alligator (brand unknown)
Helmet - GermanCaptain America (Iron Horse Helmets, of course)
    Underwear - Hanes
    Glasses - Pearle Vision
    Hair - Fantastic Sams

    Orange Ski Helmet Mohawk

We would like to thank David Coleman for sending us these pictures of him skiing with our orange helmet mohawk.  We know that we have sold these helmet mohawks to bikers, cyclists, skydivers, hockey teams, lacrosse teams and race car drivers.  Please let us know if we forgot your activity.

    Our Office Dog

In a effort to improve morale, encourage collaboration and limit stress in your workplace -- without spending too much money -- our boss bought a office dog about 7 years ago.

Has this dog done any of that?  NO

All she does is sleep in the nice air conditioned and heated office.  She lives the life and gets loved on by every customer who visits.

And all the customers ask the same thing, "How old is she?"

She is only 8!  I know she looks like she is 100, but she has aged like Barbara Bush.

Listen, please just ignore that dog and show the warehouse guys some attention...At least they do something around here!

BTW, the dogs name is Barkley. I have only heard her bark twice!

Crash Test Dummy Bandit has been captured!

According to the internet and a website called www.bandittrackerarizona.com the Crash Test Dummy Bandit has been captured! As you know, we believe everything we read on the internet so we know that this man is now in the slammer.

Although we are glad he is captured, we will miss the free advertising.  We would like to recommend the Fang Face Bank Robber (I mean Neoprene) Face Mask to the next burglar out there.

We wish the Crash Test Dummy Bank Robber the best of luck in prison and we will think of you the next time we watch The Shawshank Redemption.

    It's Always Your Fault

Sometimes we have customers stop by the warehouse to look for Motorcycle Helmets.  Please keep in mind that our warehouse is 47,000 Sqft.  It is huge.  There are forklifts running and careless employees everywhere.   Please keep the following in mind if anything should happen to you in our warehouse:

It's Always Your Fault: Iron Horse Helmets is an all-fault environment. You are 100% responsible for what happens while you're on our property. Think you're the hittee, not the hitter? We don't care. Think you've been wrongly accused? See the part where it says "we don't care." Your job is to stay out of trouble. If trouble finds you, take responsibility like a grownup and figure out how to avoid it the next time. This ain't the damn WalMart.

    New Skull Motorcycle Helmet

Did you know that our Skull Motorcycle Helmets is hand made?

The artist who makes it (who's name can not be said) has made a new 2013 model and it is ineradicable!  We have attached a image for your eyes only.   We are currently taking orders and they should ready to ship in about 40 days. The cost will be $205 which is a lot for a helmet that is not DOT approved, but it costs a lot to look this cool.

    Gunnery Sgt Hartman

We have two heroes here at Iron Horse Helmets.  The first one (as you know) is Ronald Reagan.  You might recognize his voice if you ever call us because we have him on our voice mail.

Our second hero it Gunnery Sgt Hartman from the best movie ever.  Actually it was not the best move, but the best first half of a movie ever.  Seriously, if you turn it off the moment Gunnery Sgt Hartman dies you will love it...Everything after that just sucks.

We have had this picture on our office for some time now:

We now have Gunnery Sgt Hartman as our live chat agent:
Be sure to check out our website and welcome Gunny to the Iron Horse Helmets family.  Show him just how crazy our customer are.

    New Face Mask

Announcing another new Neoprene Face Mask.  I think this is number 146 or something around there.  The one happens to be another Zombie Face Mask.  Yes, another Zombie!  We have named it the New Zombie Face Mask.  It should be obvious that we are running out of names by now.

    Another Motorcycle Safety Study

As part of  passion for motorcycling safety, we are beginning a series to keep you informed about important safety topics! We will be reviewing a fascinating report issued by the The Governors Highway Safety Association from last year. The report, titled Motorcyclist Traffic Fatalities By State 2011 Preliminary Data, was authored by Dr. James Hedlund (I bet he is smart) from Highway Safety North. As one might expect, the report recommends several common sense strategies for states to adopt to lower the number of motorcycle fatalities, including:

  • Increasing motorcycle helmet use
  • Reducing alcohol impairment (stop drinking and riding)
  • Reducing speeding (boring)
  • Training all motorcycle operators (that will cost you)
  • Encouraging other drivers to share the road with motorcyclists (right)
  • It concludes that the most effective strategy for drastically reducing motorcycle related fatalities on the nation’s roadways is to enact a universal helmet use law in the 31 states that do not yet have such a law (communist).

The preliminary data from this report, as well as previous reports, bears this out. Data supplied by all 50 states and the District of Columbia in February and March 2012 suggests that the number of motorcyclist fatalities in the United States was about the same in 2011 as in 2010.

While fatalities decreased by 1.7% during the first nine months of 2011, the 2010 data suggests that the final numbers are unlikely to show a decrease; e.g. the 2010 motorcyclist fatality total for the first nine months was 2.0 % greater in the final data than in the preliminary data. Unfortunately, the fatalities recorded in 2011 will probably be strikingly similar to the 4,502 fatalities recorded in 2010.

Through the first nine months of 2011, motorcyclist fatalities decreased in 23 states, increased in 26 states and D.C., and were unchanged from 2010 in only one state. The states that saw fewer fatalities attributed the decrease to a number of factors:

  • Poor cycling weather
  • Reduced motorcycle registrations
  • Reduced motorcycle travel
  • Increased law enforcement
  • Increased rider training and motorcycle safety education
  • The 26 states that saw increased fatalities mostly attributed the inverse:

  • Good cycling weather
  • Increased registrations
  • Increased travel
  • Return to normal levels after unusually low 2010 numbers
  • Perhaps most ominously, data from 1976 to 2012 shows a clear correlation between increased fatalities and registrations, and the same correlation between motorcycle registrations and gas prices.

As gas prices continue to climb, more and more people are looking to save money with motorcycle travel, and the most effective way to curb a steady increase in fatalities is to enact universal helmet laws. The clearest argument for this:

  • When worn, helmets prevent 37% of motorcycle-operator fatal injuries in a crash and 41% of passenger fatal injuries.
  • Despite this staggering statistic, universal helmet laws are in place in only 19 states and the District of Columbia. The report’s conclusions (and common sense) clearly dictate the use of a motorcycle helmet. We hope that the information seen here will encourage more riders to invest in protective gear. Stay tuned for more vital information on this critical topic soon!

    Valentines Day Special

Many people (5) have e-mailed us asking if we have any Valentines Day Sales.

Iron Horse Helmets never has sales! Does the Federal Government ever have sales? Does Apple ever have sales? We try to stay in pretty big company.

We have scoured the internet looking for a Valentines Day Special for our customers and we have found this one.

No Iron Horse Helmets employee actually has the balls to get his balls pierced, but good luck to you.

    Decelerator Helmet

Our increasingly digital culture seems to be following Moore’s law of exponential acceleration – but sometimes you need to slow things down to understand them a little better.

To that end, German artist Lorenz Potthast has built what he calls a Decelerator Helmet. It is what it sounds like: a helmet that allows you to experience the world in slow motion. It’s an aluminum sphere that fits snugly over your head; your only visual connection to the outside world is a small camera, mounted to its exterior, that transmits live, but slow-motion video to an interior display.

Potthast explains that the helmet is meant to “decouple … personal perception from … natural timing:” it’s an experiment in engaging differently with our fast-paced world. Playing around with the flow of time, the artist suggests, exposes its important role in mediating the relationship between our inner experience and the outside world:

The decelerator gives the user the possibility to reflect about the flow of time in general, and about the relation between sensory perception, environment, and corporeality in particular. Also, it dramatically visualize[s] how slowing down can potentially cause a loss of presen[ce].

    Ebay

Occasionally we get a e-mail or phone call asking why our motorcycle helmets are on Ebay for $20 and we charge $60 for the same helmet.  The reason is simple enough; the motorcycle helmets on Ebay are Knock offs.  Some guy in China, Pakistan, or India is knocking off our helmets.  We searched the internet and we found some other companies that are getting knocked off so we are happy that we are in good company.  We inserted some of the Knock Off images below:

    We sometimes deserve your scorn

We sometimes deserve your scorn. We sometimes deserve your shame. But never let it be said we don't deliver eventually. For the last six months, our team of buyers have been quietly working beside a heated swimming pool in a five star hotel with an open bar and all the amenities paid for by us… in fact, now that we're thinking about it, maybe that's the reason why it took so long for them to finally order our German Chrome Motorcycle Helmets!

But nevermind that, the German Chrome's have finally arrived...again. Get them while we have them because Myrtle Beach Bike Week will wipe them out....again.

    Employee Training

In business, not everything is as it seems. Someone who acts like your friend might be secretly gunning for your job. And what seems like a smart business move might bring your company to the brink of financial ruin. And what looks like a nice refreshing cocktail in a tall glass garnished with flowers might actually be a flower arrangement in a vase.
When you run your own business, you’re very rarely on stable ground. You need to be prepared for anything and everything to change drastically at any moment. And furthermore, you need to prepare your employees. How do you do that? It’s easy: by putting some trapdoors around the office and warehouse. Not just anywhere, though. You want to put your trapdoors in strategic locations to best hammer home the core values of the business world.
This might sound complicated, but don’t worry, we here at the Iron Horse Helmets University of Business Management Development Leadership have you covered. Here’s a quick and easy guide to adding trapdoors to your office:
    1. Make sure some your trapdoors are totally hidden, while others are in plain view. This teaches your employees that sometimes you can see issues coming, but not always!
    2. Of the ones that are in plain view, make it so only about 60% of them are actually rigged to open when you step on them. This teaches your employees that not everything you perceive to be an issue turns out to be an issue at all!
    3. Make it so a few of the trapdoors drop you into a very pleasant place. Like, maybe it opens and the employee on bar stool with free beer. This teaches your employees that some issues turn out to be blessings in disguise!
    4. The thing about trap doors is they’re unpredictable. Sometimes, there’ll be a bunch of people around when someone goes down; that means plenty of people to help him climb back out. Other times, it’ll be one person all by himself, and he or she might be stuck down there for months. That’s why it’s important to tell your employees to carry their phones on them at all times, so if they fall in a trapdoor all alone, they can still get their work done!

    Metal Face Masks

Just in case you haven't figured out yet, Iron Horse Helmets employees are huge fans of Mad Max.  We really only like Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome and that might be because we have a crush on Tina Turner. But, we are still Mad Max fans.

That is why we are proud to announce that we are finally getting in our metal facemasks. They are not here yet but they should be here within the next month. Please call us if you are interested in reserving one. We are getting them in metal plate, flat black metal, and solid smooth chrome. They are expected to sell for around $40.

Be sure to buy one, right around town and listen to We Don't Need Another Hero!

    Birmingham Engraving

We would like to thank our friends at Birmingham Engraving for our new wall art.  They put our logo's on this old wood pallet.  We did not even need to supply the pallet, although we have about 1000 extra.  The best part:  It was FREE.  Thanks again!

    Trooper Motorcycle Helmet

This is the point in the Blog where we would normally put lyrics to Iron Maidens' The Trooper.  But we have a issue with The Trooper (the song, not the Trooper Motorcycle Helmet.)  The song does not actually say the word Trooper once.  Weird, you make a song but you don't even mention Trooper!

Who are we to second guess Iron Maiden!

    E-mail of the Week!

Aaron ask this about our DOT Flat black beanie skull cap:

Hey I was wondering how big the padding is on this helmet. I'm looking for a DOT helmet that isn't super fat, something low profile. Is this helmet like most other DOT helmets that look huge on your head? Is there anyway you might be able to send a few more pictures of it? Thanks for your time.

Our answer....Because he obviously did not read our honest description.

    Aaron-
Funny you ask for a small looking DOT motorcycle helmet because  I am looking for
    1. A politician that does not lie
    2. Unicorns
    3. Free lunch
    4. A really good light beer
    5. Leprechauns
    6. Honest Lawyers
    7. Cure for Cancer
    8. The Tooth Fairy
    9. Bigfoot
    10. Cheap Gas
    11. Gold at the End of the Rainbow
    12. World Peace
    13.  Words that rhyme with Scalp and Orange
    14. A cop when you need one
    15. A wife who laughs at my jokes

Unfortunately, the items I want don't exist and the item you want does not exist either.  They do not (no matter what the internet says) make a true DOT helmet that does not look like a mushroom on your head.  The helmets you see that look good (like on OCC and Sons of Anarchy) are all novelty helmets.

    The Office

We always love seeing out motorcycle helmets on TV.  We have been on way more TV shows than we can count, but we usually know beforehand.  We were surprised Thursday night when we saw one of our old German Novelty Motorcycle Helmets on The Office.  We were also happy the Jim was wearing our motorcycle helmets and not Dwight.  Once again, Dwight is not in our helmet...We would never sell anything that ugly.

    Biketoberfest

We love seeing what people do with our motorcycle helmets.  The helmets above is our skull motorcycle helmet and the owner has installed our 3 inch chromed spikes down the middle of the helmet.  Wow, it looks so cool! This picture was taken at Biketoberfest 2012 and was e-mailed to us by Jim Carchidi.
